Trump deals another blow to Obama’s legacy

President Donald Trump dealt another blow to his predecessor’s legacy on Tuesday by announcing the United States would be withdrawing from the Obama-era Iran nuclear agreement.

Trump slammed the Obama administration’s “horrible deal” with Iran, which he said “was so poorly negotiated that even if Iran fully complies, the regime can still be on the verge of a nuclear breakout in just a short period of time.”

Former President Barack Obama fired back in a 12-paragraph statement posted to Facebook. Obama slammed Trump’s decision as “misguided” and accused the president of turning his back on America’s allies. (America’s closest ally in the region, Israel, strongly opposed remaining in the deal, as Obama wanted.)

Whether the former president likes it or not, Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran Deal is another blow to what’s left of Obama’s presidential legacy.

The U.S. would withdraw from the Paris Climate Accords, which marked a pillarof Obama’s legacy on climate change, Trump announced in July 2017. Trump blasted the deal as an affront to American sovereignty.

In June 2017, Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rolled back the Obama administration’s Waters of the U.S. rule, which drastically increased federal regulations of streams.

In October, six months later, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt announced plans to eliminate the Obama-era Clean Power Plan. Trump also approved both the Keystone XL and Dakota pipelines Obama had rejected.

On Dec. 14, 2017, Trump’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reversedthe Obama-era Net Neutrality policy that increased federal regulations of the Internet.

Trump has overseen the dismantling of several of Obamacare’s most controversial aspects. The tax cuts package Trump signed on Dec. 22 included a provision repealing Obama’s individual mandate. On Oct. 6, Trump rolled backthe Obama administration’s contraception mandate, which forced religious groups like the Little Sisters of the Poor to provide birth control for all employees, regardless of conscientious objections.

Trump’s Department of Education rolled back several measures conservatives had decried as federal overreach.

The Trump administration repealed the Obama-era mandate requiring all public schools to implement transgender bathroom policies and speech codes, on Feb. 22, 2017. Trump’s administration on Sept. 22, 2017, revoked a legally suspect Title IX guidance that regulated sexual assault proceedings on college campuses.

Trump has taken other actions that would undo parts of Obama legacy but have been challenged in court.

Trump reversed the Obama-era decision to allow openly transgender soldiers to serve in the military and announced plans to phase out Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) amnesty program for certain illegal immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children. Both of those actions remain tied up in court.
